Hesperaloe malacophylla Hochstätter & Mart.-Aval. is the newest member of the genus Hesperaloe — described in 2010, it is the most recently recognised hesperaloe and remains extremely rare in cultivation. The epithet malacophylla (Greek: “soft-leaved”) points to its distinctive soft leaf texture, which presumably sets it apart from the stiffer foliage of most other species.
Taxonomy and nomenclature
Described by Fritz Hochstätter and José Guadalupe Martínez-Avalos in 2010 from Mexican material. Family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. POWO accepts the name. The description added the eighth species to the genus, expanding the known diversity of Hesperaloe beyond the seven species recognised by the late 1990s.
Distribution and natural habitat
Mexico. Precise locality and habitat details are not available in the accessible English-language literature. Given that the second author (Martínez-Avalos) specialises in the flora of Tamaulipas and the Sierra Madre Oriental, the species may originate from north-eastern Mexico, in habitat conditions broadly consistent with the rest of the genus.
Cultivation guide
| Hardiness | −8 to −10 °C / 14–18 °F (estimated; USDA zones 8a–8b) |
| Light | Full sun (estimated) |
| Soil | Well-drained (estimated) |
| Water | Low (estimated) |
| Availability | Extremely rare; not in the commercial trade |
No cultivation data is available. The soft-leaved character might suggest slightly more shade or moisture tolerance than the stiffer-leaved desert species — but this is speculative. Hardiness is estimated from the genus-wide data and the probable north-eastern Mexican origin.
For the determined collector, obtaining this species would likely require direct contact with Mexican herbaria, botanical gardens or the describing authors. As with Hesperaloe chiangii and Hesperaloe tenuifolia, the value of Hesperaloe malacophylla for succulentes.net lies in documenting its existence, acknowledging the knowledge gap, and flagging it for future horticultural exploration.
